Community Building

By definition, the ones who obtain the services of a charity normally do not pay for these services. That means that a community of concerned people must fund the charity in order to provide these services. The Mission to Seafarers, as a charity, needs to build the community that supports our work.

The Mission to Seafarers is a small charity and our ability to do fundraising is limited. Often when talking with the public about the Mission, people will say they have never heard of us even though we have been serving in the Port since 1962. So we need help to make the Mission to Seafarers known.

These events have been developed to help us build community, recruit volunteers and raise funds. The Board of Directors appoints committees to organize these events. The Mission is always looking for new opportunities to outreach and fundraise within the community.

Please contact the Chaplain if you are interested in helping with these events.

Fund-raising Dinner

The Dinner is usually held on a Friday evening in April at 5:30 pm at the Current River Community Centre; see calendar for date. The program includes a guest speaker. Tickets will be available at the beginning of March.

The Community Centre prepares an excellent meal; it is a buffet and the closest you can get to home cooked when you are eating out. The dinner is a good opportunity to have supper with your friends and learn something about the Mission to Seafarers.

Meat Sale

The Meat Sale is held so that the orders will be delivered on a Wednesday prior to the Victoria Day weekend.

Order forms available at the beginning of March. Meat orders are taken by a Mission to Seafarers Congregational Rep or a volunteer. If you don’t do not know someone taking orders, contact the Mission. Order forms with payment are turned in about the 1st of May.

People appreciate the quality of the meat we sell through this fundraiser. European Meats is a Thunder Bay company, and their meat is from suppliers in Murillo and Western Canada. The meat has no additives or preservatives and European Meats makes the sausage using a mixture of beef and pork. All of the meat products are gluten-free.

Open House

The Open House is normally held on the last Sunday in September from 1:30 to 3:00 pm at the Seafarers’ Centre; check the calendar to confirm the date. A Light lunch is provided.

The Open House is an opportunity for the community to see the Seafarers’ Centre, and visit with the Chaplain and members of the Board of Directors. It helps the community understand what we do, and for people to explore volunteering with the Mission.
